Candidate for Ward 9
I want to thank Londoners for the opportunity of representing you on Council. It is an honour and a privilege to serve you for the past four years.
It has been quite the learning curve; coming to terms with Planning and Environment, Civics and Corporate Services Committees, as well as Audit and being a Board Member for Upper Thames Conservation Authority and London Middlesex Housing. This has given me an incredibly broad viewpoint from new development to managing ageing infrastructure for our most vulnerable residents and the environment, while doing our best to be fiscally responsible for competing priorities.
I believe I have learned how to ask the right questions. I know I will no longer look at a sewer grate or water in the same way. I get excited about low impact development and bio-swales and a free flowing river. I feel the same way about waste management and waste diversion, and I hope to see London move to reducing waste and implementing green bins.
I’ve learned just how difficult this decision making is, balancing the needs of existing neighbours and London’s future growth. Listening to constituents’ concerns and supporting City policies when they are in conflict is very challenging. We may not have always agreed on issues, and I respect that.
Even though I represent Ward 9, City Councillors make decisions that are City-wide, such as the importance of increasing our investments in assuring there is affordable housing for everyone. We need to support our small and medium-sized businesses as they are the backbone of our economy. We need to keep our roads, sidewalks and bike infrastructure safe and in good repair.
What has not changed? I am still passionate about this great City. I still believe in respect for each other. I still want to make a difference. My focus continues to be on Ward 9 which is changing rapidly. How we develop is crucial to how the City will meet the needs of London residents. I still support better transit for all Londoners, keeping the City affordable for residents, ensuring that we stay an age-friendly City and supporting the London Plan.
I love our quirky neighbourhoods with their own personalities like Byron, Lambeth, Riverbend, Talbot Village and our rural neighbours. I also look forward to the new areas coming on stream, such as Silverleaf and West 5. How we balance growth and still protect our environment and heritage is still important to me.
To my family, friends, and campaign team and to all of you, thank you for your continued support and loyalty. I could not do what I do without your help, and I hope you will support me in October.
